HCC/Wentland Sports Complex Parking Issues - Wednesday, June 24, 2015
Dear HCC Parents,
This is the first summer for playing summerball at the HCC/Wentland Sports Complex since we built the Hand-n-Hand Child Care Center. We knew that there would be time required for adjustment to the new building and lot. To help with congestion, we chose to start games on the t-ball and coach pitch diamonds at 6:15 pm. As most coaches have their teams arrive 1/2 hour prior to the game, this would allow time for families and staff to leave the child care facility which closes at 5:45. If you arrive prior to 5:45 we ask you to NOT park directly in front of the building so parents can safely load their infants and toddlers into their vehicles. There is also no parking on the sidewalks or anywhere that isn't marked as a parking space.
Unfortunately, we have experienced difficulty with some families choice of parking "spaces". Parking on the grass is not allowed as there are sprinkler heads there (many of which were damaged from Opening Day). We do want all parents to know that on Torque Dr, just north of the Complex, there are 5 grass/gravel lots to use. There is a paved lot at the end of Torque. There are over 400 parking spots between the front, side, and back lots. Finally, many of our families who play on diamonds 12-15 park at the high school and walk over on the walking path.
HCC's philosophy has always been a family-oriented, positive, recreation program for children to experience the fun of sport. For all of those parents, coaches, and volunteers who model this for our children, thank you. Unfortunately there are always a few who do not. Yesterday an 80+ year old volunteer and I were directing traffic in our front lot and informing parents where to park once the lot was full. We were yelled at, sworn at, called names, and treated very disrespectfully. One mom who had been told the lot was full, swerved and accelerated her car at our senior volunteer, nearly hitting him. While I do understand that parents have many stresses placed on them and often times are running late, this is unacceptable.
Again, we know that the majority of our parents and families are supportive of our philosophy and appreciate all you do for our community. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
